Biography

 

Hefa Cheng is a tenured associate professor in environmental science at Collee of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a Ph.D. minor in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford University in 2006. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow and a consulting assistant professor at Stanford University between 2006 and 2009. He joined the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry as a research professor, supported by the Outstanding Oversea Talent (“One Hundred Talents”) program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. In 2015, he moved to the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University as a tenured associate professor. He is the author/co-author of over 100 journal papers including in Nat. Clim. Change, Nat. Commun., Environ. Sci. Technol., Wat. Res., and contributors of two book chapters. He received the SCOPE-Zhongyu Young Scientist Award from the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in 2012, and Hou Defeng Award from the Chinese Society of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry in 2014. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Environmental Chemistry (China). His research focuses on understanding the mechanism of organic pollutant degradation on natural minerals, developing mineral-based treatment for destruction of organic pollutants, as well as on developing novel approaches for apportioning the sources of heavy metal pollution in surface soils.
